Noble Voyeurism
I am amazed how my son and his friends can watch each other play video games for extended periods of time. They get so engrossed in each other's processes and accomplishments seemingly without boredom. In this picture my son is thoroughly engrossed in his friend's prowess in navigating the game's labyrinth and overcoming the obstacles to victory. After my first reaction of being baffled of how they selflessly enjoy each other's exploits, I am inspired to review my life and see where I can pursue this same sense of enjoyment in merely witnessing. It is my good fortune to be blessed with a profession where I get to stand next to my clients and intimately watch their own personal process of structural integration, self discovery and awareness. In that sense, my son's fixed expression begins to look familiar. I know that look -- how it feels. Being a parent also affords me the pleasure of enjoying watching as my sons figure things out. The more I get still and just notice what is happening around me and watch others and enjoy their strategies and victories, the more I feel a part of the human race. It feels good to just be a part of mankind, and who knew not being the center of attention would be so fulfilling?
